Cities Tastes and Tongues

The City Plates are a project of the Food Culture Museum. Each plate is an image of a city portrayed through selected facts and local foods, language and culinary wisdom. “Ancient food culture traditions (recipes, proverbs, ingredients) are dying in the modern world of international fast food culture, electronic communications…,” says Miralda.

The City Plates series was begun by Miralda at the Istanbul Biennale in 1997. Working with researchers and residents of each city, he presents an abstracted ecology of contemporary food rituals and myths. The City Plates poetically engage human imagination and memory with culinary connections, cartography and calligraphy.
